Registration Rules & Information

Please read these guidelines before registering for the 2026–2027 season. Registering means you understand and agree to them.

The Season & Commitment

This registration is for Marshall Middle School students joining the Science Olympiad team for the 2026–2027 season.

This is a real commitment. Science Olympiad is a team event. If you don't believe your student can do full justice to the program — attending the weekly classes and competing at Regionals — now, before you register, is the time to step back. Once a student is on the team, not showing up affects the performance and standing of the entire team.

Regional competition: early February, always on a Saturday — exact date to be announced. Attendance is mandatory for all team members.
Coaching: runs September through the competition; attendance at all sessions for your assigned events is required.
Scheduling: review the coaching schedule before choosing events, and avoid events that clash with other commitments (sports, music, classes).

Important: Submitting the form and paying the fee does not guarantee a spot — spots are limited.

Registration Fee

The team fee is $200, paid by PayPal on our Team Dues page (a PayPal account isn't required — cards are accepted). The fee helps cover tournament registration, event supplies, coaching materials, team shirts and other logistical expenses.

Refunds: if your student is not placed on the team, your fee is refunded.

Financial hardship? No student is turned away for inability to pay — email scioly@mmofoundation.com to discuss options before registering.

How to Register

Pay the $200 fee via PayPal on the Team Dues page.
PayPal will email you a confirmation with a Transaction ID — keep that email.
Complete the registration form with your contact information, event choices, and your Transaction ID.

One form per student — duplicate submissions are voided. Registration dates will be announced soon.

Submissions are final. Please review your answers before submitting.

Team Placement

Spots are limited, and registering and paying does not guarantee placement. When spots are limited, they are assigned in this order:

Prior placement and/or experience with Science Olympiad (7th and 8th graders)
Coaches' children
Grade level (8 > 7 > 6)
First come, first served for 6th graders (except 6th graders whose parents are coaches)

If your student is not assigned a spot, your registration fee is refunded.

A note for coaching families: Being a coach's child does not guarantee that the student will be assigned the same event their parent coaches. We will make every effort to place the student in that event if they are interested, but all event assignments follow the same balancing process.

Event Selection & Assignment

Review the coaching schedule and event guide before ranking.

Rank your top 10 events in order (1 = most wanted).
Your top 10 must include at least 2 build events: Boomilever, Elastic Launch Glider, Hovercraft, Ping Pong Parachute, Roller Coaster, and Scrambler.
Each student is placed in 3 to 4 events.
We aim for a balanced mix of study, lab/hybrid, and build events. Assignments try to honor your ranking but are not guaranteed — in rare cases we may assign outside your top 10 to keep the team balanced.
You may select up to 3 events (not in your top 10) that your student absolutely cannot do, with a brief reason for each.

Once team formation is complete, no event changes are accepted.

Partners

To be paired with a specific partner, enter their name (and email) on the form; they must enter your student's name on theirs, and you should both submit an identical top-10 list in the same order. If you don't choose a partner, we'll match you with one.

Code of Conduct

Every team member and family is expected to represent Marshall Middle School with respect, integrity, and good citizenship — at practices, online, and at competitions.

Students are expected to:

Attend all coaching sessions for their assigned events, arrive on time, and come prepared. It is your responsibility to show up on time and to let your coaches know beforehand if you have an unavoidable conflict.
Treat coaches, teammates, volunteers, competitors, and officials with respect.
Show good sportsmanship and academic integrity — no cheating, plagiarism, or breaking event rules.
Take care of shared tools, materials, and facilities.

Parents/guardians are expected to:

Support their student's attendance and commitment for the full season.
Get their student to and from practices and competitions on time.
Communicate respectfully with coaches and the admin team.

Consequences

Behavior that disrupts the team, violates Science Olympiad rules, or repeatedly fails the attendance commitment (unexcused absences, chronic lateness) may result in a warning, loss of event assignments, or removal from the team, at the admin team's discretion. Registration fees are not refunded for students who leave or are removed for conduct or attendance reasons.

State Competition

If the school is selected to send a team to the State Competition, student selection is done solely by the admin team based on multiple factors, including performance, citizenship, and the best interests of the team.
